Spartan Force Builder - Beta Release

27 posts in this topic

Hi all,

Spartan Derek here!:D

Over the last few months I have been squirrelling away with Spartan Gibson to bring forwards the first Spartan Games App - The Force Builder!

The App is intended to provide gamers with a FREE tool for force building as well as a play-aid to give you all the stat cards you will ever need! It will also allow use to instantaneously update statistics, issue errata, and streamline our information delivery to you all.

For those of you who have been testing the App for us behind the scenes, let me publicly thank you for your efforts and invaluable feedback! Without you, we would never have got this project off the ground.

The first of our games systems to get the 'app-treatment' will be Halo: Ground Command, followed closely by Halo: Fleet Battles. Why?....well, they were originally designed by me to encourage app-creation, so it seems reasonable that we started with those. However, in time ALL our games should appear in the Force Builder (with Firestorm: Planetfall next in the queue)

The time is coming to release the App to all. Before this happens however, I thought I should give you a brief overview on how the app works as well as some of our reasoning as to its function.

Here is the Link to the New App.

https://www.spartanforcebuilder.com/

If possible, try to have this open as you work through the steps in the upcoming guide to make your job of navigating and using the App easier.

How-To-Guide For The Spartan Force Builder

Title and Log-In Screen

This screen will allow you to log into the App and make sure that you don't have to keep re-building your armies - we will hold them on the server for you! To achieve this we will ask you for a Microsoft Log-In ID. We chose the method to begin with because the folks at Microsoft needed to OK the Halo part of the App, and they would all have a MS Log-In (obviously!). As we update the App however we are looking to allow Facebook, Goggle and other log-in methods too.

As you would expect, this is done under the privacy policy of the Spartan Games Website. It does not hold any data beyond your actual armies, and we have no access to individual persons' data.

Game Selection Screen

The App will then load to a Game Selection Screen, where you will be prompted to tap one of the game icons that will then take you to the game's Force Builder.

This Screen will also notify you of any changes/corrections we have made in the Force Builder over the last few months.

New Force Screen

This is where you will be prompted to decide the Faction you are intending to play, the Maximum Force Value (MFV) the game is to be set at and which types of Commander you wish to field.

Armies Screen

On this Screen, you will have your existing Armies listed so if you need an army fast, just choose one and save yourself some time. You can still tweak the selection later if you like. If you want to start a new Force, simply tap 'New Force' and fill in the required fields for Faction, etc.

Force Builder Screen

If you were using the Halo: Ground Command Force Builder this screen will prompt you to add a new Battlegroup using the '+' button on the right. This will then open up options for the different types of Battle Group you can use. In the beginning we will be offering the Armoured and Infantry Battle Groups you have in the core rules, but as part of our first update we will be adding the other Specialist Battle Groups I have alluded to in pervious posts elsewhere on the forum.

When you add a chosen Battle Group the Unit Requisites they should appear in the Force Builder Screen, with the element that has the Commanding Presence Loadout will always be on the top, and all other Requisites shown below. Any Unit that can take upgrades will have an Upgrade Button just below their Named Entry, which you can tap to choose which upgrades you want - this will automatically add to the Force's running total of MFV.

After that you are free to add Units to your hearts content (within the framework of the rules of course!). The App should make it impossible for you to make a mistake as we have built it to remove choices of possible Units when the Build Rating/Limitations of Selection would not permit them.

Once you are done with a Battle Group, you can add another using the '+Add New Battle Group' button at the top of the Force Builder Screen, and repeat the same process!

Once this is done, all you need to do is check to see if the Force you have chosen has exceeded the MFV. If it hasn't, then you might want to add more Units! If you have smashed through the MFV, taking too many units....and lets be honest, we always want to have more than we are allowed!.... simply use the remove 'X' button at the side of a Unit - either removing an Upgrade you have chosen or the entire Unit itself.

Game Cards Screen

Assuming you are within your MFV and you are happy with the composition of your Force you are now ready to play.

Tap the 'Play' Button and you will be taken to the Game Cards Screen. This will show you the various Units you have selected using the silhouettes taken from the back of the cards as an identifier. When you want to find out about the statistics of a card - simply tap the silhouette and your card will pop up! Then when you are done, tap the 'Close' Button to take you back to the Game Cards Screen!

Overview and Feedback

Hopefully everyone will be able to get good use out of our first App. It should be relatively simple and intuitive to use. Obviously we don't expect it to be perfect, but we would like it to be! To achieve this, we will need your help, feedback, comments and thoughts. I will leave this thread open for those of you who want to report bugs, glitches, etc, as well as any of you who wish to comment on the App in general.

Please help up make this free App the cornerstone of Spartan Gaming as the company moves forwards.

First round of updates will include the new Specialist Battle Groups and Combat Units specific to the Reach Conflict.

After that we are looking to make the App downloadable to allow folks to use it offline.

Cheers, and have fun

Derek

Success. You'll be please to know it also works great on an Xbox One.

Bug 1: Theres no numerical validation on Maximum Force size, so you can put text in, this results in an error which states "Uh-oh! Something's gone wrong! (500)" and a failure to create your force, as opposed to say an error message or piece of validation on the New Foprce Screen.

Bug 2: Once you have an error (such as that one above) Theres no way to dismiss the error banner, and it doesn't seem to go away unless you refresh.

Bug 3: Perhaps I'm dumb, but once logged in, I cant see who I'm logged in as, nor can I see a way to log out, this could be an issue on shared/public PCs or during a gaming night.

So far its working well for me.

Minor thing, but there does not seem to be a way to combine your grunts into a lance or your unsc infantry into 1 unit (platoon?).

Also do we know when the new battlegroups will be added?

Works for me. Thanks very much for such a good resource and availabilty of stats!

One quick question: In the rulebook (which I don't have with me at the moment!) I believe it said that the UNSC Infantry battle group had to take 2 'Infantry' units as required troops along with an officer.

The force builder automatically puts in 2 Rifleman infantry units, so I guess now that's what the rulebook meant, but the rulebook seemed a bit ambiguous and could be read that you could arguably take 2 units of ODSTs as your required units, as they are 'infantry'. This would obviously game the BR limit a bit as ODSTs have a higher BR than Rifleman.

So is it just 2 lots of Riflemen (with optional HMG/Rocket element) as standard?

Thanks!

I'm glad everyone has had a chance to get a wee-play with the App.

To answer some of the comments:

Hi Aurikon.... Re:Mobile App - At present, we are web-based because we are looking for direct feedback....so if you are looking at the app you must have internet, therefore you can feedback. In the future, we are looking to build the app to be mobile.

Hi Jonners117... There is a typo in the actual core rulebook which should state Standard Riflemen as part of the Requisite. The App is correct as it is using the updated rules (which will be posted in the next update/release).

Lance/Battle Squad Building. The only thing that would change there is in the Requisite Category, so you don't really NEED it to be shown in the app, but it cant hurt to show it as an option....I will talk to Spartan Gibson!

Hi shadykx125.... The Specialist Battlegroups are completed at our end, and just need signing off from MS. They should be in the next update.

Thanks to Ade for spotting a few of the functionality issues. We had them logged prior to release, but I'm glad someone else spotted them! Good job!

Thanks for the feedback so far

MORE!!!!! PLEASE!!!!:D

Cheers

Spartan Derek,

I don't even play Halo (FSA is my game), but I must say I am liking the direction you are going on the forums.

Keep up the awesome work!

Do you have stats, or can we reach a consensus, on what is the most common Force Value people are building towards for 2 battlegroups. At the minute I am doing 2500.

Anybody doing 3000?

At 2500 I don't fill my second battle group - there is space for another 2 warthogs/1 tank plus a second Pelican (so one for each battlegroup). [Covenant read: 2 ghosts/1 wraith and a second Phantom]

The joy of wargaming is that everyone can choose their own limits (either citing time, player army sizes, financial considerations, game-play frequency, etc) Its really tricky to have a consensus of the points-played since there are many who would have such a wide array of circumstances. If you were to ask the same question to a groups of other wargamers, you would likely get an enormous range of answers that settle to whatever the Tournament Standard was. I'm not sure H:GC has been around long enough for the community to bash out what the TSP (Tournament Standard Points).

However, I would say that for me personally, H:GC really explodes into life at +4x Battle Groups/4000+ Points.

In our design and testing space we usually play 5000pts (and that's a LOT of models!) because it gives us a chance to test multiple elements under fire at the same time. When one does the maths for how this is achieved however, its actually not the 'Everest of Points' that you might expect....

1x Mech-Inf Battle Group = 1000pts approx (upgraded)

1x Armoured Battle Group - 1000pts approx. (upgraded)

2x Specialist Battle Groups = 1000pts each approx. (upgraded)

1x Mech-Inf Battle Group = Remainder of points....(because Other Battle Groups inevitably tend to roll over! the 1000pts!)

Of course that is a bit tricky for you lot......cos you aint got the Specialist Battle Groups yet! :P

But once they launch in the App, adding that extra couple of Battle Groups will be really easy.....Jackal Hunting Pack, UNSC Silent Hunters Recon BG, Warthog Cavalry BG, Hunters Wrathful Congregation BG, ODST Strike Group, Ultra Blessed Rain....etc.... There are loads to try out!

Shouldn't be too long before MS sign them off, and as soon as they do, we will launch the update with the SBGs in the App!

Cheers

I love how convenient it is to construct battlegroups with the force builder. I just wish that Open Selection was an option, to be able to build forces without BR limits.

For example I currently play Open Selection because I have 2 BR more Infantry than what constitutes a legal standard battlegroup, so I can't create my current setup. So a way to build forces using only Points would really complete the app.

Well, save for the new Specialist Battlegroups we're all so anxious to get our hands on!

Those new battle groups sound cool!

ODSTs are such a cool troop (well elite troop) and an ODST battlegroup would be brilliant. Although I don't like to spam what are considered in canon to be rarer units, so I won't go overboard!

Firstly: I'm loving it so far.
Secondly: I love that its a web application and that I can login via my MS account. Both are HUGE pluses for me as my phone runs Windows 10.
Thirdly: While I'm looking forward to seeing other Spartan games make an appearance, I'm currently obsessed with Halo: Ground Command, so it was hugely pleasing (and convenient)  to see this was the first game supported.

This is awesome. I would love to suggest having a link to the main page(http://www.spartangames.co.uk/) somewhere on it though. Cause it just adds that little bit of user friendliness I am sure many including myself would appreciate.:)

Question, in the Force Builder the Elite Ultra have the upgrade "Death from above" that isn't on their card. Is that simply the option to deploy via drop pod instead of just starting on the board with the rest of a battlegroup?

The 'Death from above' upgrade is actually on the rear side of the stat card (you can see it in the downloads section on the website). It's a 20pt upgrade that allows them to have the orbital insertion loadout

Might be a good note for the App that some units might need both sides of the card shown so these notes don't get missed.
