What is it you want to see?

109 posts in this topic

So, over the past couple of weeks things have been...less than ideal in the forums. Some posters have felt somewhat aggrieved at the current situation, and have also felt the need to let everyone know about it. But lets be honest here, that's not the best, as it brings down the tone of the entire forums when the top unread activity is a post about how things are *^&%. Personally, I prefer to try to attack problems from multiple angles where possible. And seeing how the current trend is providing less than ideal outcomes, I figured why not try an alternate methodology.

There's a saying: "If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem." It is hard to provide solutions and ideas (trust me, its my job to do find solution), whilst Its easy to criticise and complain. As a result, a lot of people (not just in these forums, but also in the world in general) do the latter. So, lets try being part of the solution for once. Rather than posting complaints and generally vague "this needs to be improved" posts, I ask this: what is it you want to see? What sort of communication level do you want? How often a release schedule do you want? What sort of releases do you want to see?

There's just one catch - your post needs to be positive. Words such as don't, can't, won't, anything that has a anti- or negative type of connotation - those need to be completely left behind in this thread.

Why? Well, call it experience from a dozen years as a scout leader. I've found my charges tend to react better to positive rules than negative ones (eg. "When swimming, stay in sight of a Leader at all times" as opposed to "don't go out of sight of the Leaders when swimming"), and people tend to react better when it appears that you are trying to help rather than hinder.

(I know, this post is less than ideal in following these rules, but, hopefully, you get the idea).

So please, let your positivity flow!

What do you want to see? What would make your Spartan experience better?

Ok

A dedicated voice for each game - who can create a schedule and stick to it. People who can take some lumps, and roll with it, who can take away concerns and questions and come back with answers when they can

A commitment for the 3.0 rules to be out before the KS so we know what we're backing

Work on all systems with some real timetables that can be met to bring them all into the light

Regular updates on what their are working on. Nothing groundbreaking just updates saying their working on this and have made this amount of progress on it. Regular small releases that alternate games would help pervent any one group of fans from feeling left out. Just my 2 cents.

And by the way, that picture is just downright creepy.:)

The above two posts put it all in a nutshell, really. Regular comms, alternating/semi-regular release schedule, dedicated point of contact per universe (I believe Spartan Derek was already given this title?). Even if a timescale had passed, tell us in advance it's slipping and throw some tidbits on what has been done. A page here, a render there...Something.

Don't mean to ruffle some feathers, but trim the fat?...If Taskforce/Dystopian legions are falling by the wayside...time to cut? Hypothetical, not an advisory. Merely a suggestion to lower the number of plates in the air to concentrate and consolidate.

- Communication

- Communication

- Communication

- No more new games and support for each of the existing games (that's a minimum). And by supporting, I mean regularly. Not "one year for DW, one year for FA, oops it's been two years that we did nothing for PF!"

- And most of all, no more lies/broken promises. There have already been way too much of them

I really loved SG and bought hundreds of minis for almost all their game systems, I really hope they'll finally get their **** together and go forward. I'm pretty sure all of us are willing to pardon a lot of things but SG has to act and change NOW. Not in two months, now. Time is running out... Let's cross fingers!

@Skyhawk - good post. May I suggest you alter the start of the second sentence to something along the lines of "Even small items or simple progress updates..."

@Bessemer - perhaps alter the start of the second paragraph to something along the lines of "Spartan, if you are having issues with resourcing, maybe cut one of the systems? At least that way you can reconcentrate your resources on the core systems, rather than having to spread yourself too thinly across multiple ones."

"Don't want to ruffle feathers" is, in some respects, too much like the phrases "With all due respect..." and "I'm not X, but..."

@child9 - positivity, my friend, wash those noes away with it! Also, communication is nice, but, what sort of communication? Telepathy is technically communication, yes?

I want to see a streamlined version of v2.0. By this I mean:

- Simplified movement system

- Tweaks to the way SRS work so that PD mountain isn't so utterly absurd

- No changes that compromise the tactical depth of the game.

Unfortunately posts from Spartans Derek and Linde suggest that I'm pissing into the wind with the last point, but I'm trying to keep an open mind until we see something concrete (though I'm slating anything I disapprove of in the meantime in the desperate hope that the game we all love can be preserved).

Honestly if they did an in-house batrep for each game system each month, if we got to see the people behind the games having fun with them, that would do wonders for enthusiasm for the game. Like, Spartan did that one video about how the Taskforce ships were designed with cool modularity, and that was awesome. I was so hyped after that. I mean, just putting a finger on each game system to say "hey, I still care about this" would be huge, even if nothing changed about your release schedule or whatever. If you can help float the enthusiasm, you can carry your game's popularity a lot further than just what the product line supports.

I would like to see a well thought out and realistic Timeline for game updates/releases/previews.

If nothing is going to happen this year, then let us know that. Wishful thinking won't do anyone any good

A monthly update message/blog for each game system giving an idea of how things are going on announced projects, upcoming projects, and upcoming model releases. Can be as short or as long as necessary to transmit the information being given and let everyone know if timelines are slipping behind schedule.

To be a bit of a positive contrarian:

My main wishes are addressed at the community more than at Spartan. I enjoy creativity and a do-it-yourself attitude in a community. More houserules, homegrown scenarios, modeling, fluff, fiction and discussions about all of them.

In the same vein, seeing more support for that side of things from Spartan would be a plus. Rules which are friendly to tweaking, maybe a throwaway houserule from a Spartan's table now or then, a few glimpses of wild ideas which are not necessarily deemed fit for "official" publication (at least in the near future).

Other than that, I am happy for Spartan to continue the way they are doing now. The way I game, continuous support and regular new releases are of relatively little concern to me, and I'd rather see a "splash release" for an entirely new game with some exciting ideas and models.

Want to see...

No more exclusive online models.

No wonders FLGS here aren't interested in stocking FSA etc. more new players come from buying that interesting looking product on the shelf.

Seriously Spartan you discontinue your old satellites and civilian ships, then you make exclusive freighters urghh!

Let's hope freighters get rules in the next Rules version

i would like to see the company make continuous small steps in re-building goodwill among its customers.  the blog was an obvious good start and small comms consistently is better than 1 blog every 6 months or so. this theme is all throughout this thread and repeating the same comms theme is tiresome as well as all the excuses.

so lets make a new day arming the company with what we desire, hope someone there reads these posts and is willing to take initiative and respond,  and stop restating the problem over and over. hoping for a fresh start and give one more opportunity to grow the community and grow the company.

now if none of the stated concerns are addressed or we go back to deafening silence then we will know for sure that we tried as a community to do all we could do for the games we love and want to share with our pals.

;)

How about some simple adjustments to V2 rules to fix it's problems instead of the partial re-write it looks like we're getting.

Here's what we use locally to fix the Point Defense Mountain issue, quoted from my post in the Interceptor SRS Rebalance thread.

Quote

All SRS types with a PD rating Link (with the minimum of 1 per SRS in the token) to provide PD cover to any friendly unit in the token's defensive range (6" for Interceptors, 4" for others) against Torpedo Fire and Boarding Assaults.  Thus any 6-Wing Fighter, Bomber, Assaulter, or Interceptor token can provide the same 6 PD dice to a friendly ship's Defensive Fire. Interceptors however can declare an Intercept Action. Under these rules an Intercept Action can do one of two things, perform an Intercept Move and engage in a Dogfight against an incoming enemy SRS (standard per the rules pg 89-90) OR an Interceptor Token may use it's Intercept Action to Combine it's full PD with a friendly ship in it's defensive range that is the target of Torpedo Attack or Boarding Assault (So a 6-wing Interceptor token can provide it's full 12 PD to the defense of a ship). As per the book rules an Interceptor can only perform one Intercept Action per turn, however in this house rule an Intercept Action counts as an Interceptor's "Attack Run" and thus it MUST Return to Base after doing so just the same as Fighters, Bomber, and Assaulters after they make their Attack Runs.

This puts Interceptors on a more equal footing in comparison to other SRS types. Now with all wing types have the same tactical choice, whether to keep them out on roving PD coverage duty, or utilize their fullest ability in an "attack run" and in exchange lose that coverage.

So simple, you get rid of Point Defense Mountain while not completely denying the awesome amount of PD offered by Interceptors.  You simply have to choose when to use it wisely just like every other SRS type.

I often see the complaint that there's no reason to take Escorts when you have Interceptors. Why not simply change a few sentences in a paragraph and allow Escorts to Combine fire their Point Defense with each other and their parent ship against everything, including SRS.  Most battleships don't have enough PD on their own to Drive Off a 6-Wing SRS, with an Escort or two they can! Plus if you implement the Interceptor/PD Mountain fix listed above, Interceptors might have Return To Base, but Escorts Don't!  More reason to take Escorts!  But in the interest of balance you can also shoot down Escorts as normal so you avoid the problem of PD Mountain from Escorts.

On a related Issue, you think SRS are too powerful? (how often does a single ship have enough PD to actually Drive Off a SRS token)? A house rule we use, make those non-killing Hits on a PD roll count for something. Every Hit below the Driven Off threshold removes an AD from the attacking SRS token. (Note, this is for the Target Ship/Model of the SRS attack only, Hits from drive-by PD attacks of others do not count towards this AD reduction.)

Example, a 6 Bomber SRS attacks a battleship which rolls it's PD getting a Kill and two Hits. This kills one Bomber Wing, reducing the SRS Token's wing count to 5, the two remaining Hits are not enough to Drive Off, but they further reduce the AD by the number of Hits, so the Five remaining Bombers roll 13 AD (5 Bombers x 3AD = 15 AD) -2 Hits = 13 AD.   Takes a little of the sting out of that unstopability of SRS, makes you feel like your PD roll is actually worth something besides hoping for 6's.

Basically a few changes to sentences in the book and you fix game problems without major changes or re-writes or porting stuff over from other games.

I would like to see unrestricted likes I have just got a notice that I am only allowed 10 likes per day.

I would like to see Spartan bring back some of the old models as stated in this thread

I would like to see Spartan keep the current number of games they have and just create new models for the major 6. in a timely fashion 1 or 2 every 3 or 4 months

I would like to see Spartan post a vid on this site or on utube on how the game is to be played

I would like to see Spartan do biweekly or monthly up dates on rules and or projects that are on the table ( new models)

I would like to see Spartan use more poles to generate more and better ideas in how to make the game better

HELL YEA it would really be nice to see them do what they said even just once...... but I think a video and having it posted tither here or on Utube or both would go a long way to promote the game

Well, as the event organizer for this years Operation Aurum Draco at Gen Con, I was hoping to be able to show the event there.  Oh, wait...

You might want to check that out.  Thursday is sold out, but tickets are still available for Wednesday: https://www.gencon.com/events/103639
