The Vanguard, Can It Be Made To Work?

159 posts in this topic

I don't know if you could even attach the escorts to a mercenary model?

And anyway the enemy would have to allocate attacks to both echos to actually attack the real sub. After all you don't decide which is the real sub till you are attacked or make an attack. And if my opponent wants to use two full wings of TFTs on that one target who am I to say "No."? One is wasted and the other still has to face some AA. ;)

Way to over analyze a simple statement lol. I had no idea it had echo shadows :P and as to escorts with mercs, I havent read anything to the contrary. And the AA would only apply if the vessel was surfaced... Or does it have a special rule for *that* as well? Lol

Won a 1500 points game while fielding 12 vanguards last week...I rolled kill capture 70% points value, and my opponent had kill all smalls I had 12 subs 16 frigates a dreadnaught the titanic(olympic class troop ship), and two escorts. He had FSA, 2 BBs, 2 Savannah sky fortresses, a dreadnaught, one squadron of gunships one squadron of cruisers and two squadrons of frigates. Due to overly conservative use of his tft and heavy use of terrain to protect my smalls I managed to capture the DN, a BB and a Savannah as well as killing a full squadron of frigates and cruisers. only two vanguards remained when the smoke settled (as they attracted most of my opponent's firepower). But I played a wonky KoB boarding fleet.

That's good to here I'm glad the Vanguard are at least somewhat effective as a boarder. That is my intended use but I don't really get a chance to play.

It worked, but my opponent just wasn't sure what to think it was a one use play, he won't make the same mistakes again. At 1500 points I only needed to capture a DN a BB and a SF and kill some frigates and cruisers to make my points, but if it wasn't for getting the crew and CC damaged early game on a bb and having two full squadrons of vanguards and a squadron of attackers on suicide runs I never would have 'made it'. Luckily my opponent just wasn't sure how to handle the boarding threat.

SoS says something about a british submarine firing a rocket projectile from specially modified torpedo tubes. Maybe this is a hint for a possible vanguard upgrade? Or a new britannian submersible?

I had proposed just such a super weapon way back in April..... A submarine launched cruise missile, but I was brow beaten down.. :( ...vindication at last :D maybe someone was listening

I had an idea like this that worked sortof like an inverse path tow missile I propposed at one point as a solution to Brittainia's complete lack of defense against V1.0 fliers.

But that would make it the only (non-allied) britannian unit with rockets... If it makes people happy, then I am glad. Just not me. I like the idea of a knife-fighter with decent torpedoes

The funny thing is the reason I got into this game is because of the poster “FIGHT! For Your Queen and Kingdom” with the Vanguard pictured. That picture and others convinced me to play KoB. If they give it an ability that makes it playable, I'll take it.

In form of each ship having a new purchasable mar which would let them target flying models with their torpedoes, likely with a disclaimer that they only hit on 6's.

So our floating chainsaw becomes a missle boat? Not exactly what I had in mind

It was actually an answer for all KoB Vessels back when almost all of the air ships were unstoppable except for ours.

Ok, so not rockets per se, more like flying torpedos to deal with those smelly french and their damnable flying machines? (also my friend's FSA air core) I guess I can live with that lol

With these other subs being released, the poor old Vanguard is now the leader in the following classes

slowest,

weakest,

largest turning circle,

worst value for points,

lowest CC,

worst protection from tiny flyer tokens,

most useless primary weapon.

Plus its a medium capital.

This woeful topic will never disappear until Spartan review the rules for this vessel. This does, however, seem highly improbable. And so, with a world weary shrug of my shoulders, I concur with AsleepBy Day. And the poor old Vanguards, so lovingly painted and looking like vicious machineries of war, will be consigned to the deepest depths of my KR multicase, never to feel the sunlight again.

Melodrama!
